When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, the first adult molars have usually come in, establishing the back bite — making it possible for an orthodontist to assess front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships.
An early evaluation doesn't always mean early treatment. Many children are simply monitored and begin active treatment at a more appropriate age. The goal is to identify problems early when correction is often easier and less invasive.
Naples pediatric tip: Early evaluation is free at most Naples orthodontic practices. Even if your child's pediatric dentist hasn't referred you yet, you can schedule directly — no referral needed.
Treatment by Age Group
Early Evaluation
Monitoring jaw development. Phase 1 treatment if significant issues are found (severe crowding, crossbites, jaw discrepancies).
Phase 1 / Phase 2
Most active treatment window. All adult teeth erupting. Traditional braces or Invisalign Teen commonly recommended.
Teen Treatment
Full adult dentition present. Metal braces, ceramic, or Invisalign Teen. Treatment typically 18–24 months.
Phase 1 vs. Phase 2 Treatment
Phase 1 (Early Interceptive): Treatment between ages 7–10, while baby teeth are still present. Used to address jaw growth problems, severe crowding, or harmful habits. Typically uses palate expanders, partial braces, or space maintainers. Duration: 9–18 months.
Phase 2: Full braces or aligners once all adult teeth have come in, usually starting around age 11–13. This is the primary treatment phase for most children. Duration: 18–24 months.
Not every child needs Phase 1. Naples orthodontists will only recommend it when there's a clear clinical benefit to treating early.
Invisalign Teen in Naples
Invisalign Teen is specifically designed for teenagers and includes features standard Invisalign doesn't have:
- Compliance indicators (small blue dots) that fade to show wear time
- Up to 6 replacement aligners at no extra cost for lost or broken trays
- Accommodates teeth that are still erupting during treatment
- Same effectiveness as traditional braces for most teen cases
Most Naples orthodontists who offer Invisalign for adults also offer Invisalign Teen. Ask about their experience with teen cases specifically.
Family Discounts & Sibling Plans
If you have multiple children who need orthodontic treatment, many Naples practices offer sibling discounts of 5–15% on the second or third child's treatment. Ask about this when comparing providers — it can make a meaningful difference when treating two or three kids close in age.
